Cranfills Gap Volunteer Fire Department
| The Cranfills Gap Volunteer Fire
Department has been servicing the Cranfills Gap area for almost 60
years. Started in 1947, the department has grown into a thriving and
prominent fixture in the community. The first fire station was built on Hwy 22 and was large enough to hold two trucks, An addition provided room for another truck for a period of time, and was later removed when no longer needed. In 1990 a larger station was built on the south side of Hwy 22 where the town laundromat had previously stood. The station was able to house 3 more trucks. In the summer of 2005 the V.F.D. finished renovating the current station, doubling it in square footage. Space was added in the back for two more trucks, as well as a kitchen/meeting area, a dispatch station, and two bathrooms with showers. |

The C.G.V.F.D. does more than just fight fires in the surrounding
area. They also respond to all emergency calls, assisting the First
Responders in wrecks and medical emergencies.
Each October The C.G.V.F.D sponsors Fire Prevention Week at Cranfills Gap I.S.D. The elementary classes participate in a poster contest that members of the department judge. Each 1st place winner receives $3, 2nd place receives $2 and 3rd place receives $1. Later in the week members of the department bring a fire truck to the school and demonstrate its different functions for the students as well as discuss the responsibilities a fireperson has. According to Chief David Witte, the Cranfills Gap Volunteer Fire Department is very fortunate to have a very strong, supportive community. They are always willing to help out whenever needed. In the summer of 2005, after the renovation of the addition to the station, the department held an auction with items donated by a local individual. Items included such things as, a car, bar-b-q pits, tools, furniture, camping supplies and many other items. The department raised over $11,000. "That's a wonderful and rare thing to have a community like that behind you." said Chief Witte. |
